We Plan CLE 2018 | EQUITY | The concept of equity is founded in fairness, inclusivity and equal opportunity. But what does that mean in the context of planning our communities? We Plan 2018 will build awareness of the role equity plays (or should play) in shaping the places where we all live, work and invest.

CLIMATE EQUITY | Jane's Walk @ Detroit Shoreway neighborhood, 5:30-7:30PM
Jane's Walks are tours inspired by urban activist Jane Jacobs. These walks encourage people to explore and tell stories about their communities, connect with neighbors and make new acquaintances.
This walk will tour the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood and show where assets and inequity lie within the community. It will focus on topics such as access to recreational and park amenities, differing built environment challenges, and display some of the work where neighbors are leading and collaborating to create healthy, safe, equitable communities that bounce forward from the impacts of climate change.

ECONOMIC EQUITY | Jane's Walk @ Union Miles neighborhood, 5:30-7:30PM
Jane's Walks are tours inspired by urban activist Jane Jacobs. These walks encourage people to explore and tell stories about their communities, connect with neighbors and make new acquaintances.
Cleveland’s Union Miles neighborhood has followed a transitional ethnic and economic history, with numerous community groups, industries and market cycles occurring over the years. Learn more about its diverse legacy and new neighborhood programs striving to eliminate economic and social barriers for the community moving forward.

URBAN EQUITY | Storyteller Night @ Ariel International Center, 5:30-7:30PM
A free happy hour reception at the Ariel International Center in the St. Clair-Superior neighborhood featuring storytellers from Twelve Literary Arts.
Twelve Literary Arts poets and writers will perform a short program inspired by past and present winners of the Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards. The 81-year-old awards program, administered by the Cleveland Foundation, recognizes books that confront racism and explore topics surrounding diversity, equity and social justice.
Twelve Literary Arts brings performance poetry to public spaces, while supporting poets and writers of all ages with youth programming, adult professional development, and brave spaces to dream, write, and teach into reality a world of social justice and equity. The organization is directed by Daniel Gray-Kontar, who has worked as an advocate for social transformation in the city of Cleveland for more than 25 years. Gray-Kontar is an education consultant for the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts; writer-in-residence at MOCA Cleveland; the former chair of the Literary Arts Department at the Cleveland School of the Arts; and a former graduate school fellow at the UC Berkeley College of Education.

Separate and Unequal: Can We Achieve Social Equity Through City Planning? Malo A. Hutson, PhD
Join us for lunch as we explore the intersection of social justice and urban planning - and discuss the steps we can take to create more inclusive, resilient, and equitable cities.
Our keynote speaker is an Associate Professor of Urban Planning at Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, and Director of the school’s Urban Community and Health Equity Lab. Dr. Hutson is a widely-recognized scholar, teacher, and practitioner whose research at the intersection of urban planning and health inequities is of profound relevance in the planning of today’s cities across the United States, and around the world. Dr. Hutson’s specific focus is on community development and urban equity, racial and ethnic inequalities and urban policy, as well as the built environment and health.
