Complete Streets Workshop

Summit County Public Health, Akron

Complete Streets as a planning and transportation design concept recognizes that the public right of way is used by citizens with an array of characteristics, abilities, and modes of travel. The design of that right of way needs to accommodate that variety of users. At the same time, context matters – not all rights of way are used in the same manner. It also requires that the development of new or improved rights of way include consideration and input by various elements of the public sphere and bureaucracy: engineers, planners, public services, safety, public transit, business and the public.

While many of us are familiar with the concept, how has the experience been in place? The workshop sponsored by the Akron Section of APA Ohio looks at local practice and its impact, and will provide attendees with tools to develop policies and practices appropriate to your own communities.

Program Agenda.

8-8:30 am: Registration & Continental Breakfast

8:30 am – 9:15 am: Cleveland Complete Street experience: Cleveland has been a leader in developing policies approved by City Council and embedded in the protocol of the bureacracy as well as a detailed set of guidelines to use in right of way design.

9:15 am – 10:30 am: Achieving Complete Street Environments – two communities in our region, Kent and Cuyahoga Falls, have sponsored a reworking of generic streetscapes into areas that successfully accommodate a variety of uses and enhances walkability. In addition, travel needs of buses and transit riders often receive limited attention. This panel will show the practical aspects and results of Complete Streets design.

10:30 am – 10:45 am: Break

10:45 am – noon: Best practices projects and policies – Complete Streets is intention, design, protocols and implementation. This session will review examples from around Ohio of projects in place and the variety of policies communities have enacted.
