Director of Planning & Community Development

City of Solon

The City of Solon has an opening for the position of Director of Planning & Community Development. This position is full-time, exempt, unclassified and reports directly to the Mayor.

The Director of Planning & Community Development is responsible for daily management, supervision and goal setting of the Planning and Community Development department, including planning, building, construction management, GIS, and zoning enforcement functions.

This primary tasks and responsibilities include writing, maintaining and administering the base planning and land use documents for the city; providing site plan review and architectural review services while insuring efficient, customer friendly processing of construction related projects through the administrative review process. The Director of Planning & Community Development will also provide leadership and management of people and processes for the Planning and Building departments and administers the department annual operating budget. In addition, the Director of Planning & Community Development recommends governmental measures affecting land use in the physical environment of the city, prepares reports, communicates official plans, policies and procedures to City Council, Planning Commission, civic groups, citizen committees, the general public and administration and serves as advisor to, and attends meetings of, City Council, Planning Commission either directly or indirectly. Lastly, the Director of Planning & Community is responsible for supervising the enforcement of the city zoning codes and other land-use related codified ordinances.

Qualifications include a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university with a degree in urban and regional planning, land-use planning or a closely related field, and a minimum of six (6) years of progressively responsible supervisory or related experience plus a minimum of ten (10) years’ experience in urban planning. An American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification is preferred.

This position is at Grade X2 on Solon’s wage scale offering a salary range from $87,719.27 to $109,649.09. The successful candidate will be slotted according to their experience and credentials. City benefits include medical, prescription, dental and vision. In addition, benefits include membership in the Ohio Public Employer’s Retirement System, vacation and sick leave accruals.
