We Plan CLE | Coe Lake Park Jane's Walk

Berea

The sandstone quarry business began in Berea in the 1840s, and throughout the next 90 years, large-scale quarrying conducted at the Big Quarry bore Berea the nickname of the Grindstone City. When the Big Quarry was closed in the 1940s, the land was deeded to Berea to establish Coe Lake Park. In recent years the City created a Planning and Development Committee that worked with City staff to re-envision the space and allocate money to the park to completely revamp it making it more of a regional amenity and attraction by installing a new amphitheater, nature trail system, large pavilion, and community playground. Through multiple funding sources and collaborative efforts with citizen groups and partners, each new project improved upon the former to make the area more vibrant and robust. Once the center of sandstone quarrying, Coe Lake Park has become the heart of City programming and community engagement.

The route will be around the Coe Lake Park starting at the Historical Society for background information on the City’s past.

Logistics:

The tour begins at the Berea Historical Society (118 E Bridge St, Berea).
