Principal Planner

SAFEbuilt Studio seeks a professional with excellent planning and marketing experience for an immediate opening in our metro Detroit office in Royal Oak, Michigan.  This principal planner will work primarily with our Michigan and Illinois planning staff on comprehensive plan, zoning ordinance, and on-call assistance for our client communities.  Job responsibilities include:
 
  • Lead and/or team with other staff on the preparation and production of comprehensive plans, plan elements, studies, assessments, similar planning documents, and zoning ordinances, including public outreach, research, drafting, illustrating, mapping, and document layout and formatting
  • Serve as project manager for public sector clients providing on call planning/zoning assistance and attending meetings as needed (which will include some evenings), as well as conducting project work (zoning ordinances, comprehensive plans, etc.) for those client communities
  • Organize, prepare for, and attend public outreach events and public meetings
  • Assist planning manager with marketing and business development efforts
  • Develop teaming opportunities with other professional service firms
 
Applicants for this position must be able to work independently on concurrent projects in a relatively fast-paced environment that will include evening meetings.  Key areas of experience include:
 
  • Creative ability in both community design and policy development
  • Detailed understanding of relationship between comprehensive planning and implementation strategies and tools
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to teach and coach younger planning staff to produce high-quality work in a collaborative environment
  • Successful RFP response and proposal preparation track record
  • Experience with traditional and innovative public outreach practices, both in person and on-line
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite, Adobe Creative suite, plus GIS; familiarity with Sketch-Up is desirable.
     
Education: Master’s degree in planning or related field and AICP certification are preferred.
 
Experience:  Minimum of 8 years of professional experience; private consulting experience is desirable, with a blend of public and private preferred.
