Associate Planner/Engineer
Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission
The position requires the practice of basic engineering, planning and research skills in transportation planning, modeling and project development. Associate engineers/planners work independently or as part of a team with moderate supervision from the department head, assistant director, or other more senior staff. Associate engineers/planners will be expected to provide task guidance to assistant transportation engineers or planners or to interns. They must be able to make effective communication via written reports and oral presentations to committees and other groups.
Examples of Work:
• Organizes and facilitates meetings for various programs, initiatives, or forums. • Researches and assists with development of the regional travel demand model. • Conducts statistical analysis, esp. related to performance of the transportation system. • Participates in local and state committees. • Prepares research and planning reports and summaries. • Develops project design, methodology, scheduling and recommendations for planning projects with moderate supervision from supervisor. • Conducts and analyzes field studies and surveys to collect primary data for planning purposes. This may include field review. • Presents reports and represents MORPC in a non-policymaking capacity to government officials, citizen groups, professional organizations, etc. • Works directly with consultants to provide information required for studies to benefit the public. • Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned. • Assist with updating the Metropolitan Transportation Plan.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
An associate engineer/planner should possess a working knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of urban or transportation planning. Good communication (written and oral) abilities are essential and a strong knowledge of Microsoft Office. Basic math, algebra, and statistical training required, along with the ability to produce simple budgets and financial reports. The ability to maintain a positive working relationship with peers, the public, and outside agencies is necessary. Should have a valid driver’s license, good driving record and maintain liability coverage as required by MORPC. Should be willing to use agency or personal vehicle with mileage reimbursed to conduct MORPC business. Essential functions include the ability to use telephone, computer, and conduct field investigations.
Acceptable Experience and Training:
Completion of a bachelor’s degree in City and Regional Planning, Civil Engineering, Geography or comparable subject matter from an accredited college or university; a minimum of two years experience; or an advanced degree in appropriate field of study is acceptable as a substitute for experience.
