Transportation Planning Intern (Data Analytics & GIS)

Licking County

Pay Range: $14/hr

This fall internship is an opportunity to work with a local governmental planning office that participates in a variety of community planning aspects such as transportation systems, land use regulation, community planning, grant administration, housing rehabilitation, and floodplain & stormwater planning.

The qualified individual will be a student who may be interested in the planning field or the fields of GIS mapping or data analytics. The individual must be enrolled in a college degree program and have coursework emphasizing data analytics, GIS mapping, statistics or other such relevant courses. Said individual will be paired with a more experienced planner to be trained and collaborate on completing specifically designed tasks for this internship. The types of projects that this intern may be assigned may include data analyzation, data visualization, preparing maps, conducting research on an assigned topic, preparing written correspondence or reports on research assigned, assisting planning staff with components of a plan, technical document, etc.

Minimum Qualifications:

Junior, Senior or Graduate Student at an accredited University and enrolled in a course of study to obtain a degree in Urban Planning, Geography, Engineering, Data Analytics, Landscape Architecture, Public Administration or a related program.

Additional Qualifications (Agency/Dept. Qualifications):

A valid Ohio driver’s license and safe driving record is required. Ability to drive and function in a safe manner while working in hazardous situations (i.e. along the highway). Having the ability to use hand tools is preferred (hammer, wrench, drill, etc.). Basic GIS and Adobe Creative Suite knowledge is preferred. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to lift and/or move up to 65 pounds of traffic counting equipment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, and outside weather conditions. The employee may be required to perform field work along highways.

Hours: Flexible (8-16 hours per week) Salary: $14.00 per hour, depending on qualifications.

Duties:

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

• Assists in data analysis and report compilation. Will commonly work with such data sets as; traffic counts including hourly, total, passenger, trucks and speeds; roadway & geometric data; traffic crash data sets including all severities; pedestrian & bicycle count data.

• Organize, process, and clean large datasets.

• Collect and incorporate supplemental data from external sources. Especially to aid in the development of trends, hypothesis, or recommendations.

• Analyzes quantitative and qualitative factors.

• Creates reports, visual aids, and findings in creative and digestible formats for public education, consumption, or explanation to public officials.

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

• Develops GIS data layers for traffic volumes and other transportation data layers. Creates GIS mapping for transportation studies. Aids in website updates.

• Collects traffic count data and/or pedestrian count data for use in Travel Demand Forecasting Model, corridor studies, and other projects.

GENERAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

• Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.

• Promotes and maintains positive and effective working relationships and promotes good public relationships as a representative of Licking County Government.

• Will represent themselves, the department, and the county in a professional manner at all times. Represents the LCPC or LCATS in public settings.

• Maintains complete, accurate, and well-organized records at all times.

• Operates as a team and as such may require a team effort to complete tasks in a timely manner. This may require staff to assist in duties that are otherwise not considered a part of that individual’s duties in order to ensure this office functions properly and work is completed on time. (i.e. covering for other staff when they are out of the office, completing large mailings, assisting customers at the counter if other staff is otherwise detained, etc.)

• Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable OSHA safety standards that pertain to the essential functions of the position and all agency safety procedures.

• Remains informed of current developments and procedures pertinent to duties; may be required to attend seminars/training.
