Community Planner

Portage County Regional Planning Commission

Pay Range: $45,000-$49,000

Portage County is in Northeast Ohio within a 40-minute drive or less of Cleveland, Akron and Youngstown and has 5 cities, 6 villages and 18 Townships. A population of approximately 163,000 and growing. The area is predominantly suburban-rural with great schools and friendly communities.

Portage County Regional Planning Commission is seeking a motivated and energetic candidate who wants to be part of our cutting-edge planning tools and techniques. Our office performs land use and zoning, grant writing, historic structures mapping, recreation services, working on farmland preservation tasks. As part of this we have also integrated ESRI Story maps and InDesign as a product for marketing and community use. We have developed an excellent relationship with our communities and may soon be working beyond our county limits. This position is an excellent opportunity along with access to all the great things Northeast Ohio has to offer.

General Definition of Work

The position requires responsible professional work in the handling of a variety of assignments for the Planning Commission. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Planning Director.

Typical Tasks

Review development proposals including subdivisions and replats for conformity with principles of good planning, land use practices, and for compliance with development regulations.

Collects, organizes and maintains physical, social, economic, and census data for use in reports and planning.

Can prepare GIS maps and graphics for staff reports, plans, and presentations.

Assists with Commission and Committee meetings as required.

Can respond to inquiries from the public regarding planning activities.

Coordinates and serves on project teams.

Performs independent work and can develop concepts, analyses, and make recommendations regarding current physical, social, economic and community development projects for communities and County.

Prepare grant applications, contract proposals, follow up, administration, and monitoring of implementation and evaluation of results.

Prepares elements of Comprehensive, or Strategic Plans relating to a wide variety of social, economic, physical, and capital improvements issues, including research, analysis, design, and graphics.

Performs related tasks as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

Thorough knowledge of rural and urban planning principles and techniques, planning research, land use controls, and growth management. Has general knowledge of regulations pertaining to subdivisions and community development. Must have thorough knowledge of research methodology.

Ability to plan, organize, and carry out projects effectively. Has the ability to present results effectively in oral, written, and graphic form. Experience w/ESRI products and InDesign including the ability to create maps, edit data, create documents and other graphics to aid in planning efforts and presentations. Has the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, township and municipal officials, representatives of other agencies, and members of the public. Has the ability to handle frequent interruptions in daily schedule to provide customer service. Must be strongly motivated and require little supervision from the Director.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in planning, geography, or closely related field with, preferred two years relevant experience or master’s degree or equivalent combination of experience and training, which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Additional Requirements

Must be able to work occasional evenings, work well under stress, and possess valid driver’s license.

Salary

The salary range is $45k-$49k depending on experience.
