Parkitecture: Spring Edition – Signs of Spring
Cleveland Metroparks Garfield Reservation
Join AIA Cleveland, APA Cleveland, and Ohio Chapter ASLA for Parkitecture: Spring Edition - Signs of Spring, a collaborative exploration of the Garfield Reservation of the Cleveland Metroparks. Timed with the blooming of the redbud trees, the program offers a chance to experience one of Northeast Ohio’s most storied park landscapes as it transitions into spring.
Originally designed in the early 20th century as a picturesque city park by Ernest Bowditch in the spirit of the Olmsted tradition, Garfield Park has recently undergone a thoughtful transformation. Today it functions as a metropolitan park as part of the Cleveland Metroparks system, reinterpreting its historic framework while introducing new ecological strategies, restored landscapes, and contemporary park architecture.
The morning will include:
- A terrace meet-and-greet around the fire pit with coffee and breakfast.
- A program inside the new Garfield Park Program Center featuring Metroparks planning, design, and landscape architecture staff.
- A guided walk around the restored pond and trails with a Metroparks naturalist, highlighting both design interventions and the seasonal signs of spring.
This program offers a rare opportunity to experience how historic park design, contemporary architecture, landscape restoration, and urban ecology intersect in a living landscape. If you are interested in how historic park spaces can be thoughtfully adapted for the 21st century while reconnecting urban residents to nature, this will be a morning well spent.
